Delta Police Arrest Suspected Kidnappers, Recover Firearms and Ammunition

Operatives of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) of the Delta State Police Command have successfully busted the hideouts of suspected kidnappers, recovering one AK-47 rifle, several firearms, and 13 rounds of ammunition. The operation also led to the arrest of a suspected kidnapper.

The arrest took place on March 26, 2025, after the team, led by ASP Julius Robinson, tracked a fleeing suspect, Chedeye Mohammed, to Rivers State. According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, the suspect was apprehended after leading the operatives to a bush area near a trailer park in Rivers, where weapons were hidden.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect led the operatives to a bush after a trailer park in Rivers State where they hid their weapons,” the police statement revealed. During the search, one AK-47 rifle loaded with 13 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition was recovered.

Further investigation revealed that Mohammed, along with his gang members, was involved in kidnapping activities across Delta State, particularly in Ughelli, Agbarho, and surrounding areas. The police confirmed that efforts to arrest other gang members are ongoing.

In a separate operation, the CP-SAT team targeted suspected armed robbers and gun runners in Anyigba, Kogi State, leading to the arrest of three individuals: Zakari Mohammed, Ibrahim Mumuni, and Mohammed Hamisu, all from the Dekina Local Government Area. During a search at their residence, an AK-47 rifle and an automatic pump action gun were seized. Another suspect, Samaila Mohammed, was arrested in the same operation, and a Baretta pistol, along with three rounds of ammunition, was recovered.

In another breakthrough, the police team arrested Emu Lucky, a 35-year-old native of Igbide community in Isoko South LGA, who was reportedly selling ammunition to kidnappers. A covert operation in Olomoro community led to the seizure of 82 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition from the suspect. Preliminary investigations revealed that Lucky was working with Mohammed Bello, a suspected kidnapper already in custody.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, expressed his commitment to sustaining the momentum of these operations and ensuring the safety of all residents. “This tempo will be sustained,” Abaniwonda stated, adding that the mandate given to him by the Inspector General of Police was to ensure that all Deltans and residents sleep with their two eyes closed.

The CP also called for continued cooperation from the public, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in tackling crime and ensuring a secure environment for all. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
