Deadline Pressure: Three Ministers Resign Hours Before Tinubu’s Cut-Off
Three ministers serving under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have resigned their positions just hours before the expiration of the federal government’s deadline for political appointees intending to contest in the 2027 general elections.
The last-minute resignations came shortly before the March 31 deadline, underscoring the urgency among affected officials to comply with the directive requiring them to step down before participating in party primaries.
The directive, communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, applies to ministers, special advisers, and heads of government agencies who have political ambitions. It is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The move is designed to promote transparency and a level playing field by preventing public office holders from leveraging their positions for political advantage.
While several cabinet members had been linked to potential electoral ambitions, only a limited number formally resigned before the deadline, suggesting possible shifts and strategic calculations within the political landscape.
The development signals the beginning of broader political realignments as preparations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with expectations of further changes within the federal cabinet.
