“Talabi Applauds Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Commends Abiodun’s Economic Transformation of Ogun”

Can you introduce yourself to the people of Ogun Central?
I am Hon. Olamide Davies Talabi (née Showunmi), a proud daughter of Ogun State, a seasoned administrator, humanitarian and community leader. I have over two decades of governance and leadership experience, including serving three times as a Commissioner in the United States. My career has always been driven by service, institution building and empowerment of communities. I am deeply passionate about the development of Ogun State and committed to contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s progress.
What distinguishes you from other aspirants?
What sets me apart is a combination of experience, compassion and proven results. Over the years, I have built institutions, funded empowerment programmes and supported initiatives that directly impact the lives of people. I believe leadership must be measured by results and the positive changes it brings to society.
How has your international exposure prepared you for the Senate?
Serving as Taxi Commissioner in the City of Newark in the United States exposed me to structured governance, regulatory oversight and policy implementation. I supervised systems that ensured efficiency, transparency and accountability in public service. Those experiences have given me practical insights into how effective governance structures can improve service delivery and economic growth.
Why should Ogun Central elect a woman at this time?
Leadership today requires strength, empathy and a deep understanding of community needs. Women often bring a balanced approach to leadership by combining firmness with compassion. As a woman, I understand family struggles, economic realities and social challenges, and I believe this perspective will help in crafting policies that truly address the needs of the people.
What inspired your Senate ambition?
Through my humanitarian outreach and engagements with communities, I have seen many people struggling with basic necessities. These experiences convinced me that beyond charity, we need strong representation in policymaking that can create lasting solutions and opportunities for our people.
Some people say you are not deeply rooted in Nigeria. What is your response?
That perception is not correct. Despite my international engagements, I have remained strongly connected to Nigeria through humanitarian programmes, investments and continuous engagement with communities. My commitment to Nigeria and to Ogun State has always been evident in the initiatives and projects I support.
What impact has your organisation made in Nigeria?
Our programmes support petty traders and small-scale entrepreneurs by providing financial assistance to help them grow their businesses. During festive seasons such as Christmas and Ileya, we distribute food items including bags of rice to families to ease economic hardship.
Through the Miss Africa Tri State initiative, we have also mentored more than 250 women and distributed over 35,000 sanitary products, clothing and educational materials across Africa and shelters in the United States.
You also founded a domestic violence shelter?
Yes. Through Women In Shelter and Environment (WISE), I pioneered the first Domestic Violence Shelter in Nigeria located in Oyo State. The shelter accommodates up to 55 women at a time and provides protection and rehabilitation for victims of domestic abuse. Protecting vulnerable women remains one of my strongest commitments.
Are you new in APC?
No. I currently serve as the Secretary of APC in America and I was also part of the Tinubu/Shettima presidential campaign committee. I have remained committed to the progressive ideals of the party and to the vision of building a stronger Nigeria.
How do you assess the performance of Ogun State under Governor Dapo Abiodun?
Governor Dapo Abiodun has demonstrated focused and visionary leadership in Ogun State. His administration has prioritised infrastructure development, economic growth and investment promotion, which are critical to the state’s long-term prosperity.
Major projects such as the Agro Cargo International Airport are designed to boost agricultural exports and position Ogun State as a key logistics hub in Nigeria. The Commercial Autoport project in Iperu is also expected to transform the automobile importation sector and generate significant employment opportunities.
Beyond these projects, the governor has invested in road construction and rehabilitation across many parts of the state, improving connectivity between communities and enhancing economic activities. His housing initiatives and investments in education, healthcare and security are also gradually improving the quality of life for residents.
What is your assessment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration?
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shown courage and visionary leadership in implementing critical reforms aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s economy for sustainable growth.
One of the most significant decisions of the administration was the removal of the fuel subsidy, a policy that had consumed enormous national resources for many years. Although the reform initially created economic challenges, it was necessary to redirect funds towards infrastructure development, education, healthcare and social investment programmes.
The administration is also implementing major tax reforms designed to strengthen government revenue and improve fiscal stability.
Another landmark initiative is the Coastal Highway project, which is expected to enhance trade, tourism and transportation connectivity along Nigeria’s coastline. The administration’s commitment to strengthening local government autonomy will also ensure that resources reach grassroots communities more effectively.
Nigerians are facing economic challenges. What is your perspective?
Economic reforms often come with short-term difficulties, but they are necessary to build a stronger and more sustainable economy. With patience and effective implementation, these reforms will eventually deliver long-term benefits for Nigerians.
What are your legislative priorities?
My priorities include youth employment, empowerment of small and medium enterprises, protection of women and vulnerable groups, improved healthcare services, better educational opportunities and infrastructure development across Ogun Central.
What is your final message to the people of Ogun Central?
I am your daughter and your servant. With my experience, commitment to service and passion for development, I am ready to represent Ogun Central with integrity, dedication and excellence.
