Vice-Chairman of Fusengbuwa Family Voices Concerns Over Awujale Candidate Selection
The Vice-Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Chief Fassy Yusuf, has called for greater transparency and fairness in the ongoing process to identify the next Awujale of Ijebu Land.
Speaking at a press briefing, Chief Yusuf raised concerns about irregularities in the documents submitted to the kingmakers, saying some names appeared in bold print — a move he described as potentially undermining the credibility of the selection process.
He also flagged what he saw as plans by the kingmakers to disqualify aspirants who hold the title of Otunba, arguing that nothing in the law prohibits individuals with such titles from contesting for the throne.
Chief Yusuf reiterated that the responsibility for screening and choosing a suitable candidate rests entirely with the kingmakers, not the ruling house. He said the Fusengbuwa family has no authority to reject or block eligible aspirants from taking part.
Citing examples of Otunbas who have become traditional rulers in other parts of Ijebu Land, he insisted that established precedent and existing law support their eligibility. He called on all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the process and ensure a peaceful and credible outcome for the community.
