Cape Verde Captain Ryan Mendes Under Police Investigation Over Alleged Sexual Assault

Cape Verde national team captain Ryan Mendes is under police investigation in New Zealand following allegations of sexual assault made by a Brazilian translator who worked with the team during the FIFA Series in Auckland earlier this year.
According to reports, the woman alleged that the incident occurred in March while the Cape Verde delegation was staying at a hotel in Auckland. She claimed Mendes entered her hotel room without permission after she returned from what she believed was a work-related meeting.
The complainant alleged that she was physically assaulted and sexually assaulted during the encounter. She reportedly submitted photographs of her injuries and underwent medical and forensic examinations, with the evidence handed over to New Zealand police as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway. Police are said to have obtained hotel security camera footage and are reviewing forensic evidence before deciding whether criminal charges should be filed.
As of the time of filing this report, no charges have been brought against Mendes, and he has not publicly responded to the allegations. Under New Zealand law, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The development has cast a shadow over Cape Verde’s impressive FIFA World Cup campaign, with the African nation preparing for a crucial knockout-stage fixture.
FIFA has acknowledged that it is aware of the matter and is in contact with New Zealand authorities but has declined to comment further while the investigation remains active.
The Cape Verde Football Federation has yet to issue an official statement on the allegations.
