Lagos Moves to Tighten Safety Rules on Cosmetic Surgery After Patient’s Death

The Lagos State Government has begun steps to strengthen regulation of cosmetic procedures and products following the death of a woman linked to a cosmetic surgery carried out in the state.
The state’s Special Adviser on Health, Kemi Ogunyemi, disclosed that authorities are already investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. She explained that the probe is being handled by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, which is examining the drugs used for the procedure as well as their sources.
Ogunyemi noted that the government is determined to prevent similar incidents by strengthening oversight in the cosmetic and aesthetic medicine sector. According to her, patient safety remains a top priority, and any facility or practitioner found violating health regulations will face strict sanctions.
She added that the state plans to domesticate and implement the National Policy on Cosmetics Safety and Health in order to properly regulate activities across the cosmetic value chain, including manufacturers, suppliers, training institutions and health facilities.
Also speaking at the event, a representative of the Federal Ministry of Health explained that the national policy was developed to address the increasing cases of health complications linked to substandard, adulterated or poorly formulated cosmetic products.
Officials expressed optimism that stronger regulations and collaboration among stakeholders would improve safety standards and protect residents who seek cosmetic treatments in the state.
