Lagos Taskforce Arrests 62 Suspects in Midnight Raid Across Island Hotspots
In a renewed crackdown on street crime and the misuse of public spaces, operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce on Friday carried out a midnight enforcement operation across several key locations on Lagos Island, arresting 62 suspects — 59 males and 3 females.
The operation, which began at 1:30 am, focused on high-traffic zones including Victoria Island, Falomo, the Eko Hotel axis, Osborne, and surrounding streets, where authorities say “undesirable elements” had been increasingly active.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, announced the development via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, stressing that the action was part of the state’s broader clean-up and security efforts.
“In continuation of the agency’s clean-up enforcement operation to rid the State of criminal elements, operatives of the Environmental Taskforce set out at about 0130hrs on Friday, 23rd May 2025,” Wahab posted.
He said the raid aimed to restore order in public spaces, and targeted locations that had been flagged for anti-social activities and criminal presence.
“The areas visited during the operation include Victoria Island, Falomo, Eko Hotel, Osborne and other adjoining streets where the presence of some undesirable elements was noticed. During the raid, a total of 62 suspects were arrested. Sanity was restored in all the areas,” he added.
Wahab confirmed that all arrested individuals will face prosecution, as the government continues efforts to enforce environmental laws and protect residents.
This latest operation follows a series of clean-up campaigns and law enforcement sweeps by the Lagos State Government, aimed at reclaiming public infrastructure and curbing rising reports of street crime and nuisance in commercial areas.
