Lagos PWD Rail Crossing: Car Wrecked as Motorist Survives Train Collision
A train collision that left a car severely damaged at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos has renewed concerns about road-user safety around active railway lines, after a 55-year-old motorist survived the incident without reported injury.
The collision involved a moving train travelling towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT. The incident occurred at the PWD railway corridor, where road traffic intersects with train operations. Although the vehicle was extensively damaged, no fatality was reported.
The incident, reported on Friday, October 9, 2026, once again highlights the potentially devastating consequences of conflicts between road vehicles and railway operations in Lagos, a city where motorists regularly navigate busy roads and transport corridors.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), working with security personnel, responded to the scene, assisted the driver and arranged for the wrecked vehicle to be removed from the tracks. Their intervention allowed the train to continue its journey towards Agege after the obstruction was cleared.
However, the incident also caused significant traffic disruption around the PWD axis, affecting motorists moving through the area. The damaged vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel to facilitate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the swift response of the agency’s operatives and other personnel involved in managing the incident. He emphasised the importance of coordinated emergency response when railway operations and road traffic intersect.
Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to exercise caution around railway crossings and avoid attempting to cross when a train is approaching or already in motion. He warned that disregarding railway safety procedures could result in severe injuries, loss of life and extensive property damage.
Beyond the immediate rescue, the collision underscores the need for sustained public education on railway safety, compliance with crossing instructions and effective traffic management around busy rail corridors. Authorities and road users alike have important roles to play in preventing avoidable incidents.
As investigations into the collision proceed, the survival of the motorist offers relief, but the extensive damage to the car serves as a reminder that railway crossings demand particular care. Preventing a more serious incident will require continued vigilance, responsible driving and strict observance of railway safety rules.
