Rainstorm Destroys More Than 20 Homes, Farmlands in Plateau Community
A devastating rainstorm has destroyed more than 20 houses and large expanses of farmland in a community in Plateau State, leaving dozens of families homeless and worsening concerns over the impact of extreme weather during the rainy season.
The heavy downpour, accompanied by strong winds, ripped off rooftops, brought down buildings, and destroyed valuable crops cultivated by local farmers. Residents said the storm struck unexpectedly, causing widespread destruction to homes, food stores, and other property.
Community leaders described the incident as one of the worst weather-related disasters recorded in the area in recent years, noting that many affected residents have been forced to seek temporary shelter with relatives and neighbours while they assess the extent of their losses.
Farmers also lamented the destruction of their farmlands, warning that the damage could negatively affect food production and the livelihoods of many households that depend on agriculture as their primary source of income.
Local authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage to determine the immediate needs of affected families. Community leaders appealed to the Plateau State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), humanitarian organisations, and well-meaning Nigerians to provide emergency relief materials and support for victims.
Residents also called on the government to strengthen disaster preparedness measures, improve drainage infrastructure, and invest in early warning systems to reduce the impact of future rainstorms and other climate-related disasters.
The incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of rural communities to severe weather events, reinforcing the need for proactive disaster management and climate resilience initiatives across the country.
