Commends Life Sentence for Killer of Two Nigerians in Canada
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has welcomed the life imprisonment sentence handed to the man convicted for the killing of two young Nigerians in Canada, describing the judgment as a significant step toward justice for the victims and their families.
In a statement issued by the Commission, NiDCOM said the Ontario Court of Justice sentenced the offender to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years after convicting him on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm. The victims, Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, were killed during a nightclub shooting in Vaughan, Ontario, on July 23, 2022.
The Commission noted that although the judgment cannot erase the pain suffered by the families or bring back the deceased, it represents an important milestone in ensuring accountability for the crime.
NiDCOM praised the Canadian law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities for their professionalism in investigating, prosecuting and securing the conviction of the offender. It also commended the patience, resilience and determination shown by the families throughout the legal proceedings.
The Commission recalled that Chibueze Momah, who was 22 at the time of his death, had recently graduated with a diploma in Computer Programming and was looking forward to building a successful career in the technology sector. The second victim, Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, was working as a security personnel when he lost his life. Both men were remembered by relatives and friends as hardworking, ambitious and committed to creating better futures for themselves and their families.
NiDCOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had earlier visited the bereaved families following the tragic incident to express the Commission’s condolences and solidarity.
Reaffirming its commitment to Nigerians living abroad, the Commission pledged to continue advocating for the welfare, protection and pursuit of justice for Nigerian citizens who become victims of crimes in foreign countries. It also extended its condolences once again to the families of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of their souls.
