Ondo State Moves Toward Independent Electricity Market, Commissioner Reveals Energy Reform Plans
The Ondo State Government has unveiled plans to establish a state-independent electricity market as part of a broader strategy to transform its energy sector and ensure stable power supply.
Speaking on the initiative, the state’s Commissioner for Energy highlighted ongoing efforts to reposition Ondo as a leading player in Nigeria’s evolving electricity landscape. He explained that the move is aimed at reducing dependence on the national grid while promoting local power generation and distribution.
According to the commissioner, the state is leveraging recent reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector, which allow sub-national governments to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within their jurisdictions. This framework has opened opportunities for states like Ondo to build independent and sustainable power systems.
He further outlined that the government is working on policies, infrastructure development, and partnerships with private investors to drive the energy revolution. The goal, he said, is to boost industrial growth, improve economic activities, and provide reliable electricity to residents.
The initiative is also expected to attract investments into the state’s power sector, creating jobs and enhancing overall development. With these steps, Ondo aims to become a model for energy independence among Nigerian states.
