The Federal Government has condemned the arrest of 42 Nigerian nationals in Mozambique, describing the incident as disturbing and calling for fair treatment and due process for those affected.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri‑Erewa, expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the Nigerians in the southern African country.
According to her, reports indicated that the Nigerians were apprehended at a spare parts market where traders of different nationalities were present, yet only Nigerians were reportedly singled out during the operation.
Dabiri‑Erewa described the development as unacceptable and warned that such actions could be perceived as discriminatory against Nigerian citizens living abroad.
She urged the authorities in Mozambique to either release the detained Nigerians if no offence had been committed or formally charge them in accordance with the law if there were any allegations against them.
The NiDCOM boss also stressed the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerians in the diaspora, noting that many of those arrested were said to be lawful residents engaged in legitimate business activities.
She further called on relevant authorities to ensure that the detainees are treated humanely and granted access to proper legal and medical assistance where necessary.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to continue engaging diplomatic channels to safeguard the welfare of Nigerians living in foreign countries.
