2027 Presidency: Atiku’s Online Poll Lead Raises Questions About Measuring Voter Sentiment

The latest online poll showing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of Peter Obi and other contenders has added another layer to the increasingly competitive 2027 presidential race, but the figures also raise questions about how much an online poll can reveal about the wider Nigerian electorate.

The 24-hour poll, organised by the Tinubu Must Go movement between September 24 and 25, reportedly attracted 109,799 responses. Atiku and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi received 80,809 votes, representing 73.6 per cent, while the Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket recorded 24,519 votes, or 22.3 per cent. Other candidates accounted for 4.1 per cent.

The size of the response is notable, but the identity of the organiser and the open nature of the exercise are equally important when interpreting the result. Unlike a scientific opinion survey based on a defined sample of the electorate, an open online poll allows participants to choose whether to take part. Consequently, the result cannot automatically be treated as representative of voters across Nigeria.

That distinction is particularly important in the 2027 presidential contest, where political support is being measured through rallies, party structures, social-media campaigns, opinion surveys and emerging alliances. Another recent poll illustrates how dramatically results can differ depending on methodology: an Oxford-Metro exercise involving 69,110 approved responses reported different standings among President Bola Tinubu, Obi and Atiku, while explicitly describing its exercise as open and self-selected rather than a representative survey.

The latest figures therefore provide evidence of strong engagement among participants in the Tinubu Must Go poll, but they do not establish the eventual distribution of votes in the January 2027 presidential election. The Independent National Electoral Commission has listed 18 presidential candidates for the election, meaning the eventual contest extends beyond the few names featured in individual online polls.

Beyond the headline numbers, the more important issue for the major contenders will be whether online enthusiasm can translate into broad support across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, registered voters, local political structures and actual turnout on election day.

The development also comes against the backdrop of continuing efforts by opposition figures to build a wider political coalition. Obi has previously said that any decision concerning a possible alliance with Atiku would have to involve the political parties rather than simply depend on an individual candidate stepping aside.

With the 2027 campaign season already underway, competing polls are likely to become an increasingly visible part of the political conversation. For voters, however, the significance of each poll will depend heavily on who conducted it, who participated, how respondents were selected and whether the methodology can reasonably represent the wider electorate.

The Atiku-led result is therefore best viewed as one snapshot of online political sentiment, rather than a definitive measurement of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential preference. The real test will ultimately be determined by voters through the electoral process in January 2027.
