The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of two soldiers following the successful repelling of coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in New Marte and Kumshe areas of Borno State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters Theatre Command Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Reuben Kovangiya, said the troops foiled the attempted infiltration with the support of the Air Component, which provided real-time surveillance and offensive firepower.
“In the early hours of May 27, 2025, troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) foiled an attack by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on their location in New Marte,” the statement read. “The terrorists attempted to infiltrate the troops’ location but were met with heavy gunfire. The Air Component provided immediate Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and fire support, leading to the decimation of several fleeing terrorists.”
Kovangiya confirmed that while the operation was successful, two soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice during the confrontation.
In a separate but related incident, terrorists attempted to overrun the Forward Operating Base in Kumshe but were similarly repelled.
“The collaborative effort demonstrates the renewed jointness and team spirit in the fight against terrorism, geared towards bringing lasting peace to enable socio-economic activities to thrive in the North East region,” the statement added.
During mop-up operations, troops recovered a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) SUV, which the terrorists abandoned during the pursuit. Several motorcycles used by the insurgents were also destroyed.
Kovangiya noted that lifeless bodies of terrorists were discovered, along with blood trails on their withdrawal route—suggesting additional casualties inflicted on the fleeing militants.
The military reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and normalcy across the North East and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
