Treachery Beyond Belief’: NNPP Guber Candidate Edema Quits Party in Fiery Resignation
In a dramatic political twist ahead of the 2024 Ondo State governorship race, Hon. Olugbenga Edema has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), lambasting the party’s leadership for what he called “treachery” and “crippling internal crises.”
In a resignation letter dated May 9, 2025, and addressed to the NNPP Ward 11 Chairman in Ilaje LGA, Edema accused the party’s leadership of betraying its core mandate and sabotaging his candidacy. His departure comes on the heels of the party’s abrupt withdrawal from a legal challenge to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s election—a move Edema described as “a betrayal of the highest order.”
“The party is not healthy for any serious-minded individual aiming to win elections,” Edema declared, noting that since joining in June 2024, he had witnessed firsthand the dysfunction and “rancorous disunity” plaguing the NNPP.
Highlighting his decades-long experience in Nigerian politics, Edema said he had “never seen a political party so treacherous as to withdraw a legitimate court case against an opposing party—thereby frustrating its own candidate.”
He concluded with a parting shot: “From the foregoing, it is obvious that I am not on the same page with the leadership of the party as to what a party’s objectives and values should be… No doubt, lessons have been learnt.”
Edema’s resignation further casts a spotlight on the growing instability within the NNPP, raising questions about its capacity to present a unified front in future elections.
