Nigerian Customs Raises Alarm Over Surge in Fake Vehicle Auction Scams
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a strong warning to the public over the growing activities of fraudsters posing as officials to sell vehicles through fake auction schemes.
In a statement released by the agency, Customs cautioned Nigerians to be wary of individuals and online platforms claiming to offer vehicles at giveaway prices in the name of the service. The agency stressed that it does not conduct auctions through unofficial channels or social media platforms.
According to Customs, scammers have been exploiting unsuspecting members of the public by advertising non-existent vehicles and requesting payments under false pretences. Victims are often lured with promises of discounted or seized cars allegedly cleared by the agency.
The service clarified that all legitimate auctions are conducted through due process and officially communicated via recognized government platforms. It urged citizens to verify any such claims before making payments.
Customs further advised Nigerians to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, emphasizing its commitment to protecting the public from fraud and ensuring transparency in its operations.
The warning comes amid increasing reports of cyber-related scams targeting individuals seeking affordable vehicles across the country.
