FRSC Uncovers Car Theft Scheme, Recovers Stolen Vehicle in Anambra
The Federal Road
Safety Corps (FRSC) has recovered a suspected stolen vehicle in Nnewi, Anambra State, exposing what officials described as a fraudulent attempt to regularize an illegally acquired car.
The discovery was made during a routine verification exercise at the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) desk office, where officers noticed discrepancies in the vehicle’s chassis number during documentation.
Further inspection and database checks confirmed that the vehicle’s details did not align with official records, prompting a deeper investigation. The process eventually revealed the true identity of the car and traced it back to its original owner.
Authorities disclosed that the vehicle had earlier been stolen during a kidnapping incident in 2023, raising fresh concerns over the use of stolen cars in criminal activities.
Subsequent investigations uncovered that the vehicle had been tampered with in an attempt to avoid detection, including a change of colour and the use of an unassigned number plate.
The FRSC, working in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, arrested suspects linked to the fraudulent documentation process.
The recovered vehicle has since been handed over to the police, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the case.
The FRSC reiterated the importance of the NVIS platform in tracking vehicles and curbing criminal activities, urging Nigerians to verify vehicle information before purchase and to report suspicious transactions.
