UK Radio Station Breaches Ofcom Rules After Falsely Announcing King Charles III’s Death

A British community radio station, Radio Caroline, has been found to have breached broadcasting regulations after mistakenly announcing the death of King Charles III during a live programme, despite the monarch being alive.

The United Kingdom’s communications regulator, Ofcom, ruled that the station violated broadcasting standards over the inaccurate announcement and its failure to promptly correct the serious error.

The incident occurred in May during a broadcast of The Barry Marsh Show when pre-recorded audio files prepared for use in the event of the King’s death were accidentally played on air.

One of the recordings announced that normal programming had been suspended following the supposed death of King Charles III.

The false announcement was followed by the playing of the British national anthem and approximately 16 minutes of silence before normal programming eventually resumed.

Ofcom said an apology and clarification were not broadcast until about 30 minutes after the inaccurate messages were first aired.

The regulator, which received two complaints about the incident, described the broadcast as a significant inaccuracy involving a matter of major public importance.

According to Ofcom, Radio Caroline breached two broadcasting rules. The first requires news to be reported with due accuracy and impartiality, while the second requires significant mistakes in news broadcasts to be acknowledged and corrected quickly.

Radio Caroline explained that the incident began while a staff member was carrying out maintenance on a computer at the station.

The worker reportedly accessed audio files that had been pre-recorded as part of the station’s preparations for the eventual death of the monarch and played them out of curiosity without realising that they would interrupt the live broadcast.

After discovering that the recordings had gone on air, the staff member reportedly panicked and left the premises.

The programme’s presenter was broadcasting remotely at the time and was initially unaware that the live stream had been interrupted by the pre-recorded messages.

Radio Caroline said the staff member responsible for triggering the recordings had been reprimanded and had apologised for the incident.

The station has also taken steps to prevent a recurrence, including removing the sensitive pre-recorded files from the studio computer and reminding staff about the procedures governing such material.

The incident highlights the importance of strict editorial controls and rapid corrections in broadcasting, particularly when dealing with sensitive information involving senior public figures and matters of significant national importance.
