2026 World Cup: Deschamps Explains Why France Lost to Spain
France head coach Didier Deschamps has admitted that his team fell short technically and tactically in their 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
France entered the encounter with high expectations after an impressive run in the tournament, but Les Bleus struggled to match Spain’s organisation, composure and control of the midfield.
Speaking after the match, Deschamps said his players were deeply disappointed by the result, adding that Spain deserved their place in the final.
According to him, France failed to perform at the required level and allowed Spain to dictate the tempo of the game.
“There is a lot of disappointment. The players are devastated because we had high hopes. We have to be realistic and admit that we were below Spain technically,” Deschamps said.
He added that Spain controlled the match effectively, while France failed to create enough clear scoring opportunities.
Spain took the lead from the penalty spot after Lamine Yamal was brought down in the box. Pedro Porro later doubled the advantage in the second half to secure victory and send Spain into the World Cup final.
France’s attacking stars, including Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, were largely kept quiet by Spain’s disciplined defence.
Deschamps accepted responsibility for the defeat but also raised concerns about some of the officiating decisions during the match, including the penalty awarded to Spain.
The result ended France’s hopes of winning a third FIFA World Cup title.
Les Bleus will now compete in the third-place playoff, while Spain will face the winner of the second semi-final in the championship match.
